Tech Tip: Use a Swedish pipe wrench for your next tie rod adjustment

May 19, 2021
To best work on a tie rod, technicians need a tool that will get into tight areas where the handles don't need to be opened wide to get a grip.

Adjusting a tie rod can sometimes be a tricky job. Even if a mechanic turns the wheel to get a better angle, the tie rod is inevitably going to be in a very confined space. To make matters worse, tie rods are constantly exposed to rain, salt, and snow, which can make them rusty and stubborn to adjust. To make this adjustment technicians need a tool that will grip tight and a tool that will get into tight areas where the handles don't need to be opened super wide to grip on. Tools like the KNIPEX S-Type Swedish Pipe Wrench are a great solution.

The S-Type Swedish Pipe Wrench, No. 83 60 010, features a long and narrow profile that gives mechanics enough leverage to make the adjustment. This design allows the tool to easily adjust up and down while working in tight spaces - no need to open the handles wide. The wrench’s jaws have offset teeth in opposite directions for a grip that works well with the self-locking ability of the tool. The teeth pattern is designed for grabbing round, square, hex, and flat objects without slipping. With a unique push-button design, an S-Type Pipe Wrench allows technicians to make easy and precise adjustments of the gripping width directly on the workpiece, sometimes with just one hand. This tool is available in three lengths: 13", 16 1/2", and 22" to fit a variety of applications.
