Technician shortage, update and progress discussed at SOLD17 program

Sept. 21, 2016
The trucking industry has awoken to the need to be more involved in both high schools and post-secondary institutions to promote our industry, support the institutions and recruit students.

Trish Serratore, NATEF/AYES President; Mike Betts, CEO Betts Truck Parts & Service; and Mike Woods, National Diesel Program Manager for Universal Technical Institute (UTI) will start off the SOLD17 program in Las Vegas on Jan. 22, 2017.

Betts has been working with the colleges and high schools in the Central Valley of California to institute and improve programs in diesel truck fully accredited programs. Students who successfully partake in these programs can receive college credit hours. Betts has a success story that anyone who is willing to make the effort can repeat in their community.

The trucking industry has awoken to the need to be more involved in both high schools and post-secondary institutions to promote our industry, support the institutions and recruit students. Serratore will review the plans for revisions to the NATEF and medium/heavy task list, tool & equipment and accreditation model. The expected outcome is a more tiered accreditation model that might begin with preventative maintenance inspections and then move into more complex tasks. Medium and heavy truck technician recruitment continues to be a hot topic.

Woods will share the advancements of technical training for the transportation industry and how UTI is addressing the technician shortage issue by providing highly qualified technician candidates. Woods brings a lifetime of experience in both the heavy duty diesel industry as well as being an amazing educator and administrator.

The technician shortage issue affects all of us. Come learn what is happening on both locally and nationally. See what we, as a group, and you, as an individual, can do to help with this issue.
