Some 2008-2009 Ford Escape, Escape hybrid, Mercury Mariner and Mariner hybrid vehicles may exhibit an intermittent instrument cluster (IC) issue where all warning lights may turn on simultaneously (traction control, wrench, battery, engine, airbag, ABS, low fuel), with all dashes in the odometer and the speedometer drops to zero.

This may set DTCs U155 4x4, U140 ABS, U0155 SJB, U0100 IC, U0121 IC, U0151 IC, U0155 RCM. The vehicle typically has no drivability issues when this occurs. Tapping the cluster face or dash may sometimes correct the issue. Typically the concern is intermittent and may take another 150-200 miles of driving for the concern to appear again. If the engine is shut off when the concern is present, a no-start may occur.

1. Are DTCs P0720 and/or P0722 present?

  a. Yes…. Stop. This procedure does not apply. Refer to the workshop manual section 307-01 (automatic transmission DTC index) to continue diagnosis.

  b. No….Go to Step 2.

2. Check C215 connector for terminal push-out. Refer to wiring diagram for connector location/view.

3. When the concern is present, are all warning lights on, all dashes in the odometer and the speedometer gauge is at zero?

  a. Yes….Go to Step 4.

  b. No…..Stop. This procedure does not apply. Proceed with normal diagnostics.

NOTE: Failure to remove the instrument cluster attachment screws prior to unplugging the cluster wiring harness may result in damage to the cluster circuit board.

Also, failure to unplug the instrument cluster wiring harness prior to pulling on the cluster may result in damage to the cluster circuit board.

4. With the key in the run position, tap on the IC dash/lens. Does this replicate and/or turn on/off the concern?

  a. Yes…..Replace the IC per the workshop manual section 413-01.

  b. No……Go to Step 5.

5. Lower the tilt steering column to the lowest position and remove the IC finish panel. Leave the IC installed and the IC wiring harness connected. With the key in the run position, slightly wiggle the IC wiring harness connector from front to back while watching the IC display. Does this replicate and/or turn on/off the concern?

  a. Yes…..Replace the IC.

  b. No……Proceed with normal diagnostics.
