When replacing the front crankshaft/oil pump seal on 4-cylinder models of 2008-2011 Subaru Legacy/Outback vehicles, always install a new oil seal, following the installation instructions as specified in the service manual.

Once the new seal is in place, DO NOT start the engine for a period of 10 hours following installation. This extra time period will allow for the new seal to properly fit with the bore in the oil pump housing.

When replacing the rear crankshaft oil seal, be sure to apply engine oil to both the inner and outer surfaces of the seal prior to installation.
