This bulletin applies to 2014-2016 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid (HEV) vehicles where DTC P0A1D is found. This code may be found in memory even when there is no trouble with the hybrid powertrain control module (HPCM).
The cause is a very intermittent communication error between the SSM4 and the HPCM. Follow the steps provided below to prevent misdiagnosis before using the SSM4 Generic OBD II function.
1. Check the HPCM Turn the ignition switch to OFF and wait 30 seconds. If DTC P0A1D is detected, replace the HPCM. If the code was not found, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. Reproduce the failure and perform diagnosis again.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, perform the clear memory mode and read the DTC again.
3. If after completing these steps, P0A1D does not reset, the HPCM is OK and does not need to be replaced.
