2010 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 vehicles equipped with a 3.0L engine may experience drive belt chatter at idle, power steering complaints and a hot running engine. DTC P13BA00-P13BF00 (maximum actuation duration for zero calibration for fuel injectors exceeded) and P13C000-P13C500 (maximum actuation duration for zero quantity calibration for fuel injectors not reached) may be found in the CEL.

The cause may be the one-way clutch on the alternator is seized or has excessive resistance.

  1. Remove the poly V-belt.
  2. Pry the plastic cover from the end of the alternator pulley. Insert socket wrench tool W602 589 00 10 00 to hold the shaft from turning. If you turn the pulley clockwise by hand, it should lock. If you turn the pulley counterclockwise and it should freewheel.
  3. If the pulley does not freewheel, it must be replaced. According to Mercedes-Benz, it is not necessary to replace the alternator.
  4. Use a 17mm wrench on the end of the socket wrench tool and hold it stationary (allow it to contact the frame). Insert the socket through the center of the socket wrench tool and into the end of the alternator shaft. For Bosch alternators, us M10 socket W601 589 00 10 00. For Valeo alternators, use a long Torx 50 socket available commercially. Turn the socket clockwise to remove the pulley. Remove the spacer on the Valeo alternator.
  5. Confirm correct pulley length (long pulley for Valeo and shorter pulley for Bosch). Install the new pulley and tighten with the socket counterclockwise to 80 Nm. Be sure to use a torque wrench that functions in both directions. Install a new plastic cover to the end of the pulley.
  6. For vehicles with N62 Auxiliary generator or N63 A/C compressor, verify that these components have a one-way clutch pulley and that the pulley is functioning properly.
