This bulletin applies to 2015-2019 Subaru Legacy and Outback, and 2015-2021 WRX vehicles that experience a rattling sound coming from the electronic power steering (EPS) gearbox (steering rack) assembly.
The repair involves installation of a new tension spring for the worm gear to reduce/eliminate the condition. It should be noted that the condition is not detrimental to the EPS operation.
A special tool (P/N BTP40P) is required to remove the cover screw for access to the tension spring, as well as an inch-pound torque wrench. This is essentially a torx bit that features a hole in the tip. The spring kit is available as P/N 34130AL010.
This repair does not require removal of the EPS gear box. Using the special service tool bit, remove the tension spring cover screw. Remove the tension spring and replace it with the new spring. Make sure that the spring is fully seated. Make sure that the cover screw hole is clean. Lube the O-ring with ATF then install the new tension spring cover screw with O-ring and torque to 40 in-lbs.Voice Your Opinion!
