This bulletin applies to 2004-2017 4Runner, 2007-2009 and 2010-2014 FJ Cruiser and 2005-2015 Tacoma vehicles equipped with part-time 4WD that exhibit a front differential groaning/grinding cyclical noise.

The noise may be experienced in 2WD, that goes away when in 4WD. This noise can be addressed by replacing the needle roller bearing on the left side of the front differential.

1. Confirm the condition is present.

2. Remove the LH front drive shaft assembly.

3. Remove the LH differential oil seal using slide hammer SST 09520-32040-01 and oil seal puller 09308-00010.

4. Install steering worm bearing puller 09612-30012 onto the left side of the differential carrier assembly. The drive shaft may rotate during bearing removal. Grab the drive shaft to prevent further rotation.

5. Remove the LH differential needle bearing roller using the steering worm bearing puller.

6. Install the new needle bearing roller with SST 09950-70010-01 and 09950-60010-01. Install the new needle bearing roller with the engraved print facing outward. Installation depth should be 1.4 to 1.7mm between surfaces 3A and 3B as seen in the following photo.

7. Replace the LH differential oil seal (new).

8. Install the snap ring onto the front drive shaft.

9. Install the LH front drive shaft.
