Replacing Acura starter relay

Under certain circumstances, after coming to a stop and engaging an idle stop, the engine may not restart automatically due to excessive cylinder pressure and/or low cranking torque. Typically the engine can be restarted by selecting Park and pressing the engine start/stop button.

Stop and starter relay replacement and valve adjustment will be needed. Note that Acura has extended the warranty coverage for this job to 10 years from the original date of purchase with no mileage limitation.

Relay (two needed)................ 39794-T5A-J01

Flange bolt......................... 90051-5J4-000

Throttle body gasket.......... 16176-RYE-A10

Intake manifold cover gasket...17112-5G0-A01

Intake manifold gasket......... 17105-R9P-A01

Hondabond ...........................08718-0004

You will also likely need relay puller tool P/N 07AAC-000A2A1

Note: The PGM-F1 software may require updating (check VIN applicability).

Once the starter and relays have been replaced, connect the HDS to the DLC and turn the vehicle to the ON mode. Verify that the HDS communicates with the vehicle. Then select Idle Stop Starter Counter Clear in the adjustment menu. Follow the service manual steps to access the engine intake and exhaust valves.

Set number one piston at top dead center (TDC). Align the pointer on the front upper cover with the number one piston TDC mark on the front camshaft pulley. Set number one intake valve to .22mm clearance. Set the exhaust valve to .30mm clearance. Once clearance is set, tighten the adjusting screw’s locknut to 15 ft-lb for each valve.

Rotate the crankshaft clockwise and align the pointer with the number four piston TDC mark. Adjust using the same clearance as used for number one.

Rotate the crank clockwise and align the number two piston TDC mark and adjust valves as before (.22mm intake and .30mm exhaust).

Rotate the crank further clockwise and align number five piston TDC mark and adjust valves with the same clearances.

Continue using the same procedure to adjust number three cylinder’s valves, the number six valves.

Check all spark plugs/plug seals and replace them if needed. Clean the cylinder head cover and apply liquid gasket to the front and rear rocker arm oil control valve mating surfaces. Reassemble in reverse order, following service manual torque specifications.
